A water flow of 50 CFS is considered dangerous for standard clearance vehicles. Only 4×4 High Clearance Vehicles recommended when CFS goes above 50.
On average, during winter storms, the creek will flow anywhere from 130 CFS to 300 CFS or more! December storm brought in 4000 CFS!

Water is back in the creek because Fontana’s catch basin got way too full. It’s about 6 inches. Low clearance vehicles are not recommended. Everything else can make it.
On top of Fontana Water doing it’s thing, Socal Edison that has a small power plant up the road, further up stream, had to dump some water from their catch basin, so they opened it up a little bit.
Should drop again on Wednesday afternoon.

This last week, Chris Phelps our Range Development Director, was able to get a hold of some heavy machinery so that he can widen the path on the East side of the crossing. Thanks a lot Chris for the hard work you put in.
We are getting materials from catch basin at Fontana water district; friendly neighbors helping out. The material is already being delivered on our creek road much more to come! Hopefully Fontana water district will be able to shut the water off in 8 to 10 days!
At which time we can fix/repair our side of the creek to a state much better than before!
Check out Chuck’s educational video on the Fontana Water Catch Basin!
January 29th, we had 3 unwanted guests visiting the range and getting stuck in the creek with their rented U-haul!
Thanks to Chuck, who went on full retired cop mode, he was able to get their information and inspected the U-haul. They admitted to taking the spent brass out of the range.
Two of the guys were from Oregon and the third dressed in black was from Lytle Creek.
Please please, spend the time picking up your brass. Not only does it leave it clean for the next member but it also helps prevent unwanted guests.
We highly recommend investing in a rake and a dustpan to help you pick up brass easier. Help us keep our range clean and this will also not give outsiders a reason to trespass.
Chuck and the maintenance team was gracious enough to help pull them out of the creek because they were blocking everyone from coming in.
Aftermath of the record setting rain we received on December 24th. Chuck went with a friend with a very high clearance vehicle. In that storm Lytle Creek (and Wrightwood) received 12 inches of rain as the storm parked over the region. The recorded creak flow was measured at 4000 CFPS!
The above video is one of our members with an LMTV M1078 crossing the creek. Note that this vehicle weighs 17,000 lbs!

9 February Monday; UPDATE due to upcoming rain events Fontana Water District; has determined to prevent the same damage from occurring again they WILL NOT be diverting water from the creek to their holding pond. The creek will continue to flow we can only hope for light rain. An unexpected Mother Nature event. Cleanup is still going once you cross creek! Working diligently to make as much progress in around rain this week and next weeks rains! Remember “Check with Chuck”
8 February Sunday creek is about 6 at most inches deep easy to cross! Work will began soon on cutting off the water flowing through the creek, at this time we will be able to get down to some serious repairs! Check with Chuck….. for updates !
5 February Thursday, creek is about 8 inches rock has been placed in the middle. Slow steady no problem. No electric autos; cross at your own risk. Fontana Water District estimates that their soft plug will be repaired by Tuesday. This will divert creek water into their catch basin! Our creek will dry very quickly allowing major restorations to begin! For daily updates “check with Chuck “ here at the creek status page!
Great work Chuck and team!
Thank you WEGC team for your hard work & continual updates.
3 February Tuesday creek is not as wide small area in the middle about 9 inches! It’s easy to cross put in low gear drive slow but steady!
31 January Saturday, creek is getting better about 8 to 9 inches in the middle!
According to Fontana Water District they anticipate having there soft plug (retaining wall) repaired at that time the creek will go dry and stay dry!
That’s when we will begin work on the road and creek and all repairs related to the late December storm!
30 January Friday, creek bottom has leveled off some not as deep in the middle! Range open to all members this weekend! We have plans and work scheduled soon to fix road up to the creek and also the far side of the creek Fontana Water District will be fixing there soft plug which will cause the creek to dry up! It’s at this time we can begin work!
Thanks to all for being patient and understanding!
As of 29 January Thursday afternoon the creek is about 18 to 19 inches deep. We had a couple incidents vehicles getting stuck nonmembers. One was a couple of young adult males out having fun. We managed to get those folks out the other was a U-Haul rental by some tweakers out of Oregon who had a friend that was staying in the back of Lytle Creek. They did admit to me that they were there stealing brass they gave the brass up. We towed them out, but they did some damage to the center of the creek thats about 18 to 19 inches deep. Be careful when you cross; cross at your own risk and remember the staff can’t help you. It’s an insurance risk responsibility. we hope to have the creek fixed within less than two weeks. Fontana Water District is working on the soft plug when they get that fixed. The creek will dry up and then we can begin cleanup.
Excellent capture of the pitfalls of crossing the creek in less than ideal conditions.
One could get trapped on the “wrong side” by some one who believes in “the faster you spin your wheels the more fun it is”…..
ONE MAJOR DETAIL OF INTEREST: Is this a member (or visitor to WEGC) or one of the “four wheelers” who frequent the road? My (limited) observation is the latter seem to find great joy in spinning tires and disregarding the damage caused.
Personally, when I find someone needing a small assist out of the drink, THEY attach the winch cable……and get the reminder that skill trumps wheel spinning. That truck does not need 12,000 lb line pull to extricate… amateur…
Thanks Chuck!
